In this edition of Pilgrim's Progress, L. Edward Hazelbaker "translates" Bunyan's 17th-century original into a contemporary English that will feel natural to most readers. Importantly, unlike Pilgrims Progress in Today's English, this edition is not condensed. As far as I can tell, everything Bunyan wrote is here, just gently updated. On the whole, Hazelbaker's rendition has an appealing forcefulness. There are a few minor slips (most notably, his misuse of "lie" and "lay," and his mistaken reference in the introduction to Bunyan's idiom as "Middle English"), but aside from those venial errors, he truly did a good job. His best choice was to present the dialog as it would appear in a modern novel, without Bunyan's labeling of each statement with the speaker's name. I also applaud his changing the name of Ready-to-halt to About Tofall, for reasons he explains in a footnote. The book includes an introduction, footnotes to Bunyan's Bible citations, and a number of explanatory footnotes (I wish there had been more). Interspersed throughout are various public-domain illustrations. The Kindle edition has some issues. On my Kindle, all the text is deeply indented for some reason. The footnotes are not linked (they appear at the end of each of the chapters). Much of the poetry is run together, a common problem in Kindle-land.
This book was MUCH easier to read and understand than the classic version. I gave it four stars because there were two areas that I thought needed improving;1. It is not formatted with Table of Contents, and it uses Location Points instead of page numbers (You can search the book for particular words though).2. There are many times when a pilgrim breaks out into a poetic song and the Shakespearean English is kept (and not translated to modern).I also found a similar but much edited/abridged eBook version here on Amazon for free. It is titled "The Pilgrim's Progress in Words of One Syllable" by Mary Godolphin. I wanted to read the full story first, but I intend to read Godolphin's also because it seemed to flow and be edited in all the right places.Overall I'm very glad to have bought this book.Peace.
I'm glad a friend suggested the Modern English version, because the short occasional quotes from the original that are contained in here, show me it would have been slow reading and digesting it in the original format. This was my first time reading this book, and I plan to read it again. It's attention-grabbing and thought-provoking. I love the way the author incorporates so many spiritual truths throughout. This translation also has footnotes at the end of each chapter which give the Scripture references and also explain some of the colloquialisms of that day.
John Bunyan's classic allegory of the Christian life was, at least at one time, the best-selling book next to the Holy Bible. For those struggling with the old English of the original version, this updated version is a wonderful choice. It includes both parts and also illustrations throughout the book. On top of all this, each chapter includes Scripture references. This is well-worth the price!
Easy to read. No stumbling over awkward English, and in this version, you get the full story, which is very thought-provoking and inspiring. I read another 'Modern English' version a few years ago, that, I didn't realize at the time, was quite abridged. This longer version reveals how Bunyon's story is saturated with images from scripture.
Great classic! This kindle version has verses at the end of every chapter and study questions at the end of book.
Good modernization of the English language for this book. It increases readability, which I prefer since this is a story and not strictly a doctrinal work. The notes are a mix of Bunyan's originals and those added to refer the reader back to the original English text as necessary. The biblical concepts remain true to Bunyan's original intent. I've enjoyed it.
I could not put this book down. It is a must read for all Christians.
