I have seen Sam Zell interviewed on CNBC and on other TV outlets over the years and I always came away thinking how smart he was. Zell is a true iconoclast and does not follow the herd mentality. Clearly this has held him in good stead as he has become a billionaire. I bought his book as soon as I knew it was being published as I figured there was a lot to learn from him. His wisdom seemed pretty simple and homespun, although like Warren Buffet, the man is shrewd and understands how to assess risks.After reading the book what really comes through as setting Zell apart is how he does not follow the herd mentality. The man is a true clear thinker. This is not a guy who makes his decisions from listening to the often ill-informed talking heads in the media. He does his homework and then makes his own decisions. He does a good job of explaining his philosophy, including giving examples. To his credit, Zell discusses not just his successes, but he also talks about his mistakes, namely his investment in the Tribune Company and in parenting, for examples, because you often lean more from your failures.Ultimately you should judge a book that dispenses advice on how practical the advice is and whether there is anything actionable to take away. He offers a lot of insights that are good, but also that any experienced business person already knows: work hard, have good ethics, do your homework, go against the crowd. What sets the book apart (and I’m gathering Zell as well) is how he tells the story and thinks just a little bit differently. The nuances and details are often important, and the little things Zell points out as lessons I found the most meaningful. Surprising, for a captain of industry, Zell preaches being nice to everyone; and he explains why you don’t have to be a jerk and get in people’s faces to be successful. That doesn’t mean shirking from the truth and being direct, as the book’s title says, but getting the right balance as Zell outlines has clearly worked for him. Having read dozens of books by entrepreneurs and business people over thirty years, I found this to be one of the best.The advice is there for the taking, the question is do most of us have the fortitude to stick with something you believe in when everyone is telling you that you are wrong?

BEYOND GREAT!!!!Holy smokes; I was just noticing some lower than 5 Stars Reviews. You have no idea how great this book is. I'm 83% through the book in under a week and have over 55 highlights/notes in my Kindle. This is instantly an Investment Classic. This has to be Top 3 of all time books ever written on "how to think" and "how to structure deals" and "tax efficiency" and "how to create/build a company culture". For those with less stars, go fly a kite and continue to put your head in the sand. I can't believe how great this book is and I was raving to my wife, "I can't stop reading it, this is the best among all real estate biographies/action books I have ever read". I have read ALL THE MASTERS including the other Sam Zell book by Johnson. I have read: Zeckendorf, Rouse, Hines, Trammell Crow (2), Maverick RE Investing & Financing (2), AG Spanos, Dynasty Families, Fred French syndication, etc, etc (pretty much anyone who is anyone is real estate and development). My favorite RE Investors include (current & today): Zell, Barrack and Sternlicht. If you didn't glean an MBA in deal making or actually past that, you are a moron (is that too subtle?). This is up there with all the best real estate books ever written and the best Value Investors classics on "how to think & structure or underwrite deals" (not technical, but big picture) such as: Graham/Buffett/Munger (probably most akin to Munger like thinking), FWS by Ponzio, Einhorn, Klarman, Charles Koch (both books by Koch on culture such as Science of Success / MBM / Good Profit just worth $22B), Greenblatt. If you are new to real estate or seasoned, you need to read this book. It is ripe with "wisdom". I wish I could have been fortunate enough to work with Zell and those who have at EQR, EOP, Equity Commonwealth or others; consider yourselves blessed. What a hero. The Tribune naysayers, you should have listened to him, he actually cares and aligns interests. Truly a unique wise and sound individual. I have left a few reviews in the past, but you are a fool not to read this book and if you have less than half the book highlighted, you aren't seeing it. Thank you Sam Zell. I am forever grateful of shortening my learning curve and hope to come even 25% close to what you have accomplished. This is RE Investment, Risk Analysis, LBO's, Value Investing all-in-one. Sam Zell is a master of making complex situations "simple". He can synthesize information into basic concepts and formats. What takes most people a paragraph or more to convey, he can do it in a sentence. Brilliance & Genius in simplicity. If you can't see it, I'm sorry for you. If you can say "thank you" and "blessed to have read this book". Sam: "THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR WRITING THIS". I hope to do similar things and have learned so much.

I have always admired Sam Zell from afar. Although I don't personally know him I heard many wonderful things about him. Reading them first hand was a pleasure. One thinks of a real estate billionaire as a ruthless money hungry individual. This man is an exception. While he has the smarts and the courage to put his genius to work to really pay off, he never forgets his Dad's teaching of Shem Tov, Good name. He also is considerate of his employees who evidently revere him. He measures his risks and is almost a soothsayer by applying what he knows to a "most likely" situation. He is a winner and continues winning because he has chutzpa.After reading his wonderful book, I almost feel as if I know him.

I made it through the book. There were a few somewhat interesting chapters but it is pretty much just an autobiography of his life with very limited details on what mattered to me most...which was "how" he accomplished what he did. The one area I did find useful was about mid-way through the book where "Grave Dancing" chapter. Here I learned somethings about historical commercial real estate cycles that I did not know. The rest of the book, IMO, is a bit out of touch with the real world...which i guess happens when you have acquired that level of wealth. Still very much respect what he has accomplished...he is just not a very good story teller.

Fabulous! We bought the audiobook of A Child's Book of Faeries for our young children--our youngest was 4 or 5--and they (and we parents) were all entranced by these stories. They are old-fashioned faerie tales, so the wee folk are a little mischievous--a different view of faeries than kids are accustomed to now, but the stories are truly delightful.There are only four stories--The Magic Cooking Pot, The Cake Baker, Only Me, and Paddy and the Leprechaun. The reader of the audio version (who I think is the author) is a wonderful story teller! The rest are poems or explanatory prose describing faeries, which weren't quite as mesmerizing, but the stories themselves are worth the price of the audiobook or print book! My youngest is now 11, and we all still love these stories!

We are incredibly lucky to have the wonderful and extraodinary Tanya Batt living near us, she has a story telling shop in town and knowing her was the reason we bought this book - and then went out and bought ALL her books, and all her tapes and everything she has ever published. Tanya Batt has the most dynamic imagination and interpretation of stories, and these stories are an absolute must for my children (age 3 and 4)Tanya's use of language come's more from the oral story telling tradition so her stories are best read out loud - perfect for reading out to littlies. They are richly illustrated and there is plenty to talk about in each of the pictures.These stories will be suitable for children of all ages, her stories are multi-layered - there are subtle levels to them which adults will also enjoy.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!

The illustrations were so so. I was expecting more fun stories about the wee folk geared toward a younger crowd. It isn't really organized in a way that holds young (4or 5 year olds) children's interest. We've only read it once and it collects dust.

Although Kile is at regular Scout Camp this week and we were told that we cannot listen to any more of Matilda without him.The Twits are the most miserable people you have ever met. They spend their time putting glue on a tree to catch birds for their bird pie and maybe a spare boy or two. The monkeys they keep caged decide that they are tired of their and the birds’ situations and are set for vengeance. The kids thought this was hilarious.The Minpins was by far the favorite story for my kids. It was a great fantasy story about a boy, Billy, who ventures out into the woods against his mother’s advice and discovers that the beast she had warned him of is all too real and has him cornered in a tree. While there, he also discovers an entire race of small people living in the trees who ride birds. Will Billy be able to find his way back home?A girl has The Magic Finger and turns a family of hunters into the hunted so that they can learn what it is like to be a family of ducks.This audio collection is superb with great jaunty music before and after each story and fantastically expressive narrators for all three stories. It is incredibly engaging for not only the children to listen to, but their mother as well.Overall, this is a fantastic collection of stories that are full of Roald Dahl’s inventive storytelling and dark humor. My kids and I loved it and are now continuing on into listening to Matilda.

I am writing a review of The Twits by Roald Dahl.This book is about two Twits that hate children, have three pet monkeys and eat bird pie. The live in a big house with a big garden. They are mean because they put super glue on a branch of a tree to make birds stick to it for their bird pie. At one point in the story, The Twits capture some children. Do they escape? Read the book if you want to know because I am not going to tell you. My favourite part of the book is when the monkeys and some other animals play a trick on the twits.My favourite characters in the book is are the monkeys. I like them because they are funny & clever.I would recommend this book to ages 6 to 15.

The 2013 batch of Roald Dahl audiobook readings has struck me as an uneven bunch. There are some excellent audiobooks such as the David Walliams rendition of The BFG and Kate Winslet's absolutely divine rendition of Matilda. However, there have been some dull readings that lack the extra bit of sparkle that these stories need. Some of the lacklustre readings are included in this twin-disc that contains The Magic Finger, The Twits and The Minpins.The Richard Ayoade rendition of The Twits turned out to be a grave disappointment for a listener like me. For a reading geared at children, the reader needs to empathise with the text and read in an engaging way. However, Ayoade's reading comes across as dreadfully dull and boring. After listening to this reading I can't help questioning why Puffin did not invite Rik Mayall to read this story, as he could do so in a more engaging, kid-friendly way. Anyway, Ayoade's reading is so quiet and monotonous that it almost seems designed to lull listeners to sleep rather than keep them awake with the antics of the Twits and the Muggle-Wump monkeys. Ayoade's characterisations tend to lack life, especially Mr Twit, Muggle-Wump and the Roly-Poly Bird. Mr Twit in particular comes across as dim witted and meek. This character needs to have a raucous, domineering voice and as such Ayoade's characterisation falls flat here. Only Mrs Twit is successful and Ayoade does his best to convey her scheming ways.Winslet's Magic Finger fares better. I have great respect for Winslet's voice as a narrator and audiobook reader. I have enjoyed her absolutely divine, angelic rendition of Matilda. She tries her best in this reading of the Magic Finger and pulls it off convincingly. I can imagine her having fun with the characterisation of the bewitched ducks who occupy the Gregg farmhouse. The only thing is that I wish that the narrator's voice had sounded just a little bit more girlish and naive. In this reading it sounds a little detached and deadpan. The good thing is that Winslet is expressive and not dull.Bill Bailey's rendition of The Minpins fares best. He reads expressively and offers very good characterisations of Billy and the Minpins. He strives to conjure up the atmosphere of the story. His word pointing is very good and he can does his best to match the mood nicely. However, at times I wish he had time to savour the words and express them better. Many words sound like they're being rattled off like the barrel of a machine gun.None of these recordings can displace the audiotapes I grew up with. The 1980s Tempo recordings of Dahl were so well produced and they presented sparky recordings of Dahl. The Roger Blake reading of The Twits is better able to hold the attention of its ilsteners than the Richard Ayoade or Simon Callow readings. For The Minpins I am attached to a reading by Richard Pasco. It was an atmospheric rendition that did full justice to the story, complete with sound effects and the music of Shostakovich in the background.I am sorry if I have to comment on the nuances of the readings. I know that the point of these children's audiobooks is to keep children amused and entertained. However, if the readings are dull, how can children be amused? As a keen fan of Dahl I also pay attention to the nuances of the performances, and so I would be able to imagine how the stories should sound when read aloud. I would like to let buyers know about the tenor and quality of the reading when they are considering their purchasing decisions.All in all, a good collection, severely let down by Ayoade's boring and dull Twits reading.

My kids are really enjoying this book. It's well written, and the examples actually work! My 13 year old daughter was able to make terrific progress. Best kids python book I've found yet.

As an college educator in computer science, I am always on the lookout for new programming textbooks that might be helpful for beginning students. Often times, books that are "designed for kids" tend to be awesome for adults as well.Here's what I like about this book:- Designed for first-time beginners who know absolutely nothing about programming!- Teaches the fundamental basics of Python that are needed to create various, fun projects.- Beautifully illustrated with visual examples. The book just makes you "want" to learn how to program, especially the first chapters!- Focuses more upon GUI programming, such as how to work with Turtle Graphics, Tkinter, PyGame, etc.What needs improved:- Teaches Python 2 (instead of 3 -- the current version).- Requires users to install PyGame (a game development feature), which works well for Windows-based PCs, but not so much for Mac users.- Some chapters focus so strongly on making the experience "fun" that the author tends to gloss over important programming concepts without giving them the attention that's needed to ensure the reader adequately grasps them.Overall, it's a fun book that's helpful to beginners. Yet, there are aspects that should of been improved in order to make it awesome.

The publisher says this a book is intended to help 11 to 15 year olds who want to learn how to program in Python on their own. This is true. Author Craig Richardson does an exemplary job of making programming in Python – and I am not being loose with my words – easy to learn. Not only for kids, but for adults as well. I would instantly recommend this book as an introduction to programming for people with no prior experience in the art. I like Richardson’s approach. He has created 10 “adventures” to guide the learner through their mastery of basic programming concept and the Python language. (By the way, Richardson specifically prohibits the use of Python 3: for this book, only Python v2.7.8 or later will work.) The “adventures” are oriented toward simple games which probably has the greatest chance of keeping younger minds involved and won’t bore adults either. All the code is very clearly laid out and is also downloadable. Videos are also available for some topics. (I haven’t worked every code example, so I can’t comment on bugs, if any.) Lots of illustrations as well. One thing Richardson does that most Python teachers don’t is introduce Tkinter, the module used for creating Graphic User Interfaces (GUI) very early in the game. Many Python instructional don’t mention Tkinter, assuming their readers will use only Command Line driven programs. I think Richardson’s approach, especially for younger learners, is much better and will help keep reader interest. This is a fun book. It makes learning Python easy and entertaining. True, Adventures In Python covers mostly basic stuff, much of which will not be terribly useful in the real world. But this book will definitely help the motivated reader become comfortable with bossing the computer around through coding and does provide an understanding of Python. And, as I said, adults new to programming would find this book useful as well. In my opinion, an excellent adventure!Jerry

This instructional and FUN introduction to Python programming aimed at adolescents but appropriate to anyone with minimal programming background has much to recommend it. It has FUN graduated examples beginning with Installation, Hello World-type programs and Turtle Graphics, using graphics for games with the TKinter graphical extrensions, Pygame ending with highly interactive graphical games.The book is divided into 10 increasingly advanced projects all of which are fun and cross-platform.The author has taken special care that all of the examples are cross platform. Installation instructions are included for Windows 7 & 8, MAC OS X,Linux and Raspberry Pi. The author has chosen to use the Python 2.6+ rather than a version of the 3.0+ stream. I believe the reason for this is the wider availability of programming environments and Libraries--indeed most scientific applications of Python default to 2.6+ as certain scientific libraries are not available yet in a 3.0+ release.

Now that I have finished the entire series,thought I would submit a reviewThe story of Tavi is revealed little by little with each book. The cast of characters are quite likeable with doses of humor thrown in. You almost feel that the characters are part of the family by the final book.The magical system is intriguing and makes for interesting situations. When I first started the series I expected that a character with no magical skill(no fury crafting) would devolve into the usual cliches. But thankfully Jim Butcher is a better author than that and I was not able to easily predict the plot.I thoroughly recommend this series and has become one of my favorites.My only negative feedback is the amount of battle description throughout the series. There are complex and lengthy descriptions of both large scale battles and one on one battles that really don't add much to the story. Otherwise, I greatly enjoyed the adventure!I'm ready for more from Jim butcher!

This is the culmination of the Codex Alera series, and it goes out with a bang. Tavi is coming back to Alera leading a most unusual army, only to find that his fellow Alerans are up against the wall with the merciless Vord crushing their greatest strongholds and killing their strongest furycrafting lords. At least by this point, Tavi is finally coming into his own furycrafting strength, but even he is no match for the might of the Vord. Then again, Tavi has always been smarter than he was strong, and he makes good use of that in this final war.In addition to Tavi and his crew, we see some fine performances put in by the remaining furycrafters. Even Aquataine puts in a good show. But nothing compares to the rabbits Tavi’s uncle Bernard manages to pull out of his hat. Much of those particular tricks had their origins as wild ideas from Tavi years before, but Bernard has taken them to their most impressive ends. Perhaps the most world-shattering moment comes at the command of Bernard, as a hundred commoners throw down a demonstration of power that would completely spend a High Lord’s power… and then do it again the very next minute, and the next, and the next. It was one of those moments where even as the reader you stick her head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye.I won’t spoil the end, but I’ll just say that it was quite satisfying. Just about everyone got what they deserved, in one flavor or another. In particular, the epilogue was good, tying up a number of loose ends and giving some hint about what was to follow in the years and decades ahead. As one character said, the interesting times were definitely over, and yet it felt the new story of Alera was just beginning.So, if you’re contemplating this series – particularly if you’re struggling through the slow first book, Furies of Calderon, give it a shot. The road to the payoff is long and fun, and the payoff is definitely worth it.

I love Jim Butcher's writing style--and thank God I do, otherwise I never would have been able to make it thru 6 volumes of the Codex Alera. I love that he can build a scene as finely detailed at he does, but halfway through book 5 I was thinking about abandoning the series (which I HATE to do) but there *is* such a thing as *too much* detail! Seriously, this could easily have been shortened to maybe 4 books, but I can see why he felt the need for disparity between novels to fall where they did.Butcher is great at creating characters that are easy to love --and love to hate, for that matter. Kitai and the Marat could have been fleshed out a bit better, though. For all his detail, you'd think he would put a little more into his main character 's only love interest and her people. But the thing I kept finding myself wanting was more background and lore of the Furies. Shoot-- the title of all 6 books included the Furies--and we're just supposed to use our imagination to fill in the (fairly gigantic) gaps?? Come on, man! If we had your imagination, we wouldn't need to read your books, now would we?

This is the last in the series and I very much enjoyed the series. It is not mind bending, it is not full of surprises it is good old fashioned fantasy and magic with main characters that are enjoyable, honorable and mildly conflicted. The supporting cast is both what you would expect and what you probably enjoy most when choosing this type of fiction. My only criticism is that after reading the rest of the series some of the themes that are detailed in each multiple times got a bit repetitious. Since the books barely stand on their own without reading the others it seems the repetition could have been mitigated. However, I especially enjoyed the underlying theme of different cultures banding together against a foe that would destroy them all. I thought the books did well to illustrate that the cultures had strengths and weaknesses even those that were only lightly investigated such as the icemen. I also appreciated the thought put into the consequences of certain new tactics. From an engineering stand point the attention to the difficulties inherent when using items in new and unusual ways (spoiler: Ice Ships) showed a depth of consideration that is easily glossed over in this genre.Having discovered this author via the Dresden files I was pleasantly surprised by his excellent foray into Fantasy.

When co-author Megan Woolsey was only eight weeks pregnant with triplets, she was filled with fluctuating emotions. One day she was ecstatic that her heartbreaking years of infertility were finally over, the next day she was scared about how she would take care of three babies at once. Some days she was proud that she would be a mom of multiples, the next she was awake in the middle of the night worrying that she would never get to travel outside her town again.Being pregnant with multiples is a challenging experience. It's beautiful and exciting. It's also terrifying and a test of physical endurance. All the concerns, pains and aches of pregnancy are multiplied. The huge belly. The pressure on the chest when lying down. The kicks and jabs on all parts of your belly, chest and pelvis. The enormous appetite, yet the lack of space in the stomach. The very real fear of preterm labor and the possibility of a NICU stay for the babies. The questions also multiply: How will I deliver two/ three/ four babies? What will the NICU experience be like? How will I breastfeed more than one baby? Will I ever sleep again? How will I care for the twins/ triplets/ quads? Will I have help? Newly pregnant women have many questions, and they can usually find them in books. Newly pregnant women with twins/ triplets/ quads have even more questions and find themselves floundering for information, support and help. We want to be excited, but the unknown creeps up like a cold breeze on a hot summer day. People usually do not know what to say to us. With a lack of knowledge about carrying and raising multiples, we began searching for answers. We scoured the Internet looking for books to teach us about raising multiples. Megan taped every show she could find on the Discovery Channel about multiples. Eight years ago there was not enough good information, but she bought everything she could find (five books in total). Alison Lee, mom of twins, and Megan Woolsey conceived Multiples Illuminated to shed light (see what we did there?) on the world of raising multiples. I bought this book when I was pregnant with my twins, and I really didn’t like it. It was just a collection of horror stories- pregnancies, NICU stays, people complaining about how hard the first year was- and zero practical advice. When I finished reading it I was depressed and terrified. There are so many better books out there that are a mix of stories and useful information! Don’t waste your time with this one.

I'm generally not a fan of anthologies or short stories because it's hard for me to get involved enough before the next author comes along and changes the story. But I liked this one. I was surprised, too, because I'm not a mom of twins.I think I liked it because the writing was all stellar, the editing was flawless, and the content flowed smoothly from one section to another. There were some entries that had me giggling the entire way through, and there were a few jaw-dropping stories. I think it's not just the parents of multiples - or who are expecting multiples - who will enjoy this book (which I'm positive they will!), and not just young couples hoping for multiples (which can happen until you have had only one and realise how much work it is) - I think any parent will like reading this book. It's a definite recommend!

I found Multiples Illuminated to be a finely-crafted anthology filled with practical advice and heartfelt personal stories (both the laugh-out-loud variety and the grab-the-tissues type). Families with multiples (or those with multiples on the way) will benefit from knowing they are not alone - in their joys or their fears. Even parents with children who came one at a time will appreciate the raw honesty of these contributors and editors. (We can only imagine what they've been through, nodding and shaking our heads through each tale.) In compiling and editing these stories, Woolsey and Lee have outdone themselves. This book is the perfect baby shower gift, Mother's Day gift, or a gift to treat yourself!

Bought it as an expectant father and I found it very useful reading. For me personally I found the stories not all practical readiness but also as emotional preparation. It also let me feel comfortable with my own expectant emotions, in that all are valid and that it's OK not living up to some idealised notion of a parent. These stories were all very well written. You will find yourself laughing and crying as this book brings you through all the emotions of going through fertility treatments, giving birth and finally raising your multiples.Having given birth to twins over 35 years ago this book brought back so many of those memories. I wish I had this book to read at that time.Regardless of whether you are giving birth to one or multiples this is an entertaining book and I would highly recommend it.

This cookbook does a great job of provide an easy to follow recipe with what should be very taste food. The info the Michael Simon includes about different techniques of cooking with different methods of fire is outstanding. I look forward to testing out the pork chops this weekend and other recipes this summer.

my only complaint is that the pictures aren't scratch and sniff. a fun and captivating read. recipes are well thought out. you'll want to dive into the photos with fork, knife and bib. if you love bbq, this book is for you!

This book is not simply recipes, it includes instructions for the various grills and smokers. Great graphics! I know I'll be a better grill master now!!

Beautifully made. TONS of information and techniques to learn. Beautiful images all throughout the entire cookbook. I am a huge fan of Michael Symon did not disappoint! It is impressive and would be a great gift for anyone who loves to bbq, grill, or smoke! Do not believe the other reviews about being a small book. Mine has 240 pages. I would DEFINITELY recommend this book to others!

I'm so very disappointed in this book. I thought with the name like "Playing With Fire" that it would have held more tips and how it's for the very novice of barbequers. I don't need ANOTHER cookbook with recipes for sides. I need a guiding hand in coal prep setup and help on maintaining heat no matter the outside conditions. Good thing I also purchased Meatheads bbq'ing guide. Had all my answers and THAT book I highly recommend.

This book covers it all! I think this will up my grilling skills!

We got a new Green Mountain Smoker so this book is very handy. Also love the salad recipes that go along with the grilling parts. I like this a lot. I love the spatchcocked chicken on our smoker. Probably going to try the thighs next.

N. K. Jemisin creates a wonderful world in "Dreamblood." One that I'd love to see again! A multifaceted city with cultures, religions, and politics to create a city more alive than even some of our own!I really really wanted to love "Dreamblood" but I had a few issues with it, issues I will outline book by book.Book 1: Jemisin does a terrific job introducing us to the world without making it boring or overwhelming. Right when you think you've got a handle on things, that's when the story takes off. Unfortunately, I found myself not caring about the protagonist's much. In simple storytelling terms, a character wants something and what or who is stopping them from getting it. Throughout book 1 I felt that the characters were just moving from one event to the next, with little discernible goals for us to commiserate and relate too. If this was there I would have totally given a 5/5.Book 2: Book 2 is much more interesting and improves upon some of the issues book 1 had in regards to character development. However it doesn't go all the way. The main protagonist, the only character who actually wants something, is not likable until the last 50 pages and all the others, like book 1, are simply existing and not doing much of anything. Jemisin does a great job of further expanding the world and building off of book 1 without it feeling like a direct sequel (which I loved) but I can't get behind characters that aren't relatable in any sense.I was brought to this book by the amazing Broken Earth Trilogy (which holds the spot for my favorite books of all time) but it is clear that Jemisin learned a lot from her mistakes in Dreamblood to create such a work of art with the Broken Earth Trilogy.Dreamblood is not bad. It's far better than many other books I've read, but it's not as good as BE (then again what is). So if, like me, you are thinking of reading this because of BE, I say go ahead! Just lower your standards for strong character development (if you care about that sort of thing) and you'll love it.I sincerely can not wait to see what Jemisin creates next! Her prose and world building is unparalleled!

I love these books. I wish I'd seen this volume in person before I purchased it though, because it's just too thick to fit nicely in the hand. If I'd seen how thick it is, I'd've bought each of the two books as a separate volume.Still, I can't say enough about how good these books are. Jemisin is a master world-builder; her characters are complex and engaging, and her stories are intriguing. Whether in this single volume or the two individual books, you should read these stories.

Week 1: I read a sample of one of N.K. Jemisin’s books and ordered a copy. Finished the book, ordered everything else she has written.Week 2: finished reading the stack of books and was relieved to discover that I could pre-order her next book (How Long ‘til Black Future Month?).This was the shortest, (shorter than the Hundred Thousand Kingdoms and the Broken Earth series), so it was the one I took with me on a short trip. As a result, I stayed up too late reading and spent the trip sleep deprived. Worth it.

I bought this because it had been nominated for a Nebula and World Fantasy Awards. A mistake. I am about 1/3 of the way into the first of the two books and I can't continue. In the world of the book Ehiru is a Gatherer who goes around and in the name of peace and tranquility kills off people taking their dreams and making the dreams available to another caste of people who use them to bring well being and healing power. Ehiru starts facing the fact of treachery and bad people in his guild and in the governance of the country in which he lives. He agonizes and agonizes and agonizes some more and then I start skipping paragraphs and then pages and then the entire rest of the book. Rate a 2.

In the Dreamblood Duology I had a great experience. The author has developed deep and believable characters that keep you interested in the next step of their lives. Unlike some other books I have read what she does is she takes you to a climax moment in a characters experience before moving back to other characters. So there are many moments of fulfillment reading this book instead of having to wait until the end. N.K Jemisin is a wonderful author and I have read two of her series so far. I like the characters, writing style and the fact that she has upended the normal racial standards that we have on this earth. She includes people of color in significant roles which is not often seen in current fantasy. I can't wait for the next set of books that she puts her mind to.

I was completely enchanted by both books. They are both the kind of book that asks something from the reader. You have to pay attention and learn the new ways of her new worlds. In return, you get the treat of gorgeously crafted, compelling stories and characters in contexts that give your imagination something to really CHEW on.

Loved these two books, (I liked this universe better than all the others). I hope the author revisits these characters, there's a lot that can be done with this universe. It's very good.

Loved grabbing both of these books at once. Amazing author; I will continue to watch for more. I had read The Broken Earth trilogy and loved it, so I picked up more to support the author. As I had hoped, this series was also beautifully constructed, with well paced plot, novel characters, and the most amazing feeling of freedom as her society ignores the status-quo of white male sci fi authors.It's not preachy, or in your face. But when you want to hold up an example of why it's important to upend the status quo - it's so you can have works of art like this that would never emerge from a homogenous pool of authors that can't imagine themselves not-in-charge.I love to see the boat rocked. Will continue to read and enjoy new perspectives from this author and will encourage others to do the same.

This book changed my life when I first read it in 2009. I was depressed and negative from some difficult life events and stuck that way, losing all sense of self. Reading this was hard work. I focused on everything very hard, took notes, self-reflected, and was determined to practice compassion and understanding. I payed attention to my thought patterns and weeded out the negative thoughts and changed them to positive ones. I have always had a temper so when I feel myself giving into it, I read the chapter on anger and find my control again. It's amazing and I'd recommend it to anyone who is willing to dedicate themselves to change and read it with an open mind. Anyone from any religion can use and appreciate it, including atheists. It's a way of living every day.

Having been a student of Mahayana Buddhism for the past couple years, I had been meaning to read a book by the fourteenth Dalai Lama, and was overjoyed to purchase this one after being alerted that the Kindle edition had gone on sale by the excellent ebook deal-alerting service Bookbub. Since it was the first book by the current Dalai Lama that I ever read, I wasn't sure what to expect but I did expect it to be of high quality—especially since it is his most well-known book. Fortunately, it did not disappoint me in the slightest!The Art of Happiness: A Handbook for Living was co-authored by psychiatrist Howard Cutler, who posed questions to the Dalai Lama over the series of many interviews. Cutler provides the setting and context for their meetings and also incorporates his own reflections on the issues raised in their discussions. In addition, transcriptions from several of the Dalai Lama's teachings are scattered throughout the book. It was first published in 1998, and I read the ten-year anniversary edition that was published in 2008 which includes a new preface and introduction.The book delves into the concept of using various techniques to train the mind in order to achieve true happiness. In the preface, His Holiness the Dalai Lama states, "If you want others to be happy practice compassion; and if you want yourself to be happy practice compassion." This focus on developing compassion is consistent throughout the book and is a main focus in many of the answers that the Dalai Lama gives to Cutler's questions. It seems that this is a sort of prerequisite for cultivating happiness, a foundation upon which all of the other advice is based upon.Another point that is made time and time again is that happiness comes down to one's state of mind more than by external events. There are a plethora of examples provided in the book, such as how lottery winners do not sustain their initial delight over a longterm period and instead return to the level of moment-to-moment happiness they were accustomed to prior to winning the lottery. Or how studies have shown that people who are struck by tragic events like cancer and blindness typically recover to their normal level of happiness after a reasonable adjustment period. Psychologists label this process "adaptation", which simply refers to the tendency of one's overall level of happiness to migrate back to a certain baseline.From a Buddhist perspective, the root causes of all suffering are ignorance, craving, and hatred. The book fleshes out this idea and suggests methods for one to overcome them. For example, the Dalai Lama advises, "We cannot overcome anger and hatred simply by suppressing them. We need to actively cultivate the antidotes to hatred: patience and tolerance."Overall, I was very impressed by this book. When I first started reading it I wished that the Dalai Lama had been the sole author, however I eventually grew to appreciate Cutler's additions. That's mainly because I did not realize that the book was co-authored until after I started reading it, so I had unknowingly and unintentionally set an improper expectation for myself. However, by the end of the book I had overlooked the co-authoring aspect entirely and focused more on the book's content, which is excellent. I would advise this book to anyone who is interested in the Dalai Lama, Buddhism, mindfulness, or becoming truly happy.Namaste.

Whether Christian, Buddhist, Jewish, Hindu etc, this book outlines many important elements to being a good human being and how to improve your life by choosing the positive, compassion, love, tolerance, acceptance of the others. Thoroughly enjoyed it

This book will forever be one of my favorites. The Dalai Lama's wisdom is clear, simple, and practical. He addresses many issues that we all face in daily life. Following his wisdom, you can eliminate any self-sabotage and self-created annoyances in life~ really! His wisdom also allows you to cope with the suffering that we all inevitably experience in life.

Having read other books compiled from the Dalai Lama's teachings, I was happy to finally get this book--I was sorely disappointed (I almost gave it just two stars.) There are insights and nuggets of truth in here, but most of the book is Dr. Cutler's musings about his travels, his talking with the Dalai Lama, and far less of the teaching. It felt almost like an autobiography by Dr. Cutler, who happened to meet with the Dalai Lama, rather than a book BY the Dalai Lama. I was disappointed, and felt that it was a waste of my time and money. Not recommended.

Absolutely beautiful, psychologically and spiritually helpful. I will be rereading this book after I read a few others just for a refresher, it brings to life things we already know but the beliefs and ideas are covered up by all the worldly baggage we learn along the way. It makes me feel like a better person putting things into practice in my daily life, addressed by this great read. I'd just like to thank the work put into this for the greater good. I just wish I could help.
