About the Author

Ralph Moore is the senior pastor of Hope Chapel Kaneohe Bay in Hawaii and the founder of Hope Chapel in Hermosa Beach, California. His ministry now spans more than 700 churches on six continents. Pastor Moore travels extensively, teaching pastors and church leaders biblical models for spreading the gospel and building Christ's kingdom. He and his wife, Ruby, have two adult children who are also involved in church multiplication.

The fruitfulness of Moore's ministry is amazing as far as discipling people and mobilizing them to disciple others. On the strength of the recommendations and this track record I purchased the book. 40% of the way through it is perhaps the worst book I've ever read on the topic. I'm happy for what he has achieved but as far as being able to communicate what he's done and how, I can't suggest this book. Perhaps it will get better, but I'm not sure I can hold out for that!Thus far I've picked up a few ideas that he seems to feel that are the core of his approach, but he keeps beating around the bush. Supposedly this book is part of a TRILOGY. Given how this book is going, those three might have made one really good book when condensed.By comparison, David and Paul Watson's Contagious Disciple Making had one of the BEST chapters on mentoring as discipleship that I've ever read.

I loved this book. As soon as I finished it, I bought several copies to give away. Then I went in search of other books written by Ralph Moore.I suppose there is much that could be said about Ralph's approach to discipleship, but I'll just summarize one big takeaway for me. He was talking about his approach to "mini-church" which is the small group ministry of his church. He believes so strongly in small group ministry (like Jesus did!) that he says he tells people in their weekend services, "This is not our real church. Real church takes place in our mini-churches. This is just our church convention." I love that.So what do they do in their mini-church that is so special? OK, I'll lay it out for you because it is so simple that it is profound. To start with, they eat a meal together. They don't have a Bible Study, but they discuss the previous week's sermon (from the "church convention"). Here's how they do that.1. They ask each person to summarize the sermon in a few words.2. They ask each person, "What was the Holy Spirit saying to you as you listened to that sermon?"3. Then they follow that up with this question, "What are you going to do about it this week?" In other words, what concrete steps are you going to take to respond to what the Spirit is saying to you?4. Then they pray for one another, and they don't ask for prayer requests. Instead, they pray in twos and pray for the specific things the other person they are praying with has identified that The Spirit is telling them to work on that week. And in praying for that person in the mini-church, they are agreeing to pray for that person daily for the next 7 days.5. Then there is one more question, but it is actually asked the following week, and is the first question asked in each mini-church session. They ask, "you said you were going to do xyz this week. How did that go?"Now is that brilliant, or what? Simple. Anyone can do it. Four questions and a prayer. And it is obedience based discipleship. Most of our discipleship is knowledge based. Knowledge is good as far as it goes, but Jesus didn't say in the great commission (Matt 28) "teaching them everything I commanded you", he said "teaching them to OBEY everything I commanded you." James said be doers of the word, and not hearers only. We've got to find ways to get people past listening to monologues and actually doing what the Bible says. And Ralph Moore teaches us that it is not that complicated.

Ralph Moore writes that the goal of every church is to fulfill the Great Commission: Go into all the world and make disciples! But often churches have other agenda that have nothing to do with this goal. Ralph writes a straight-forward, easy to follow and easy to implement, book filled with encouragement and direction for this important task. He tells stories of what worked and what didn't and tells us why. Then he gives us the basic elements of discipleship and how it can be applied in any church setting. So far I have read a little over half the book and can't wait to finish it.As a pastor, I am jazzed with the idea that this can work in my church!

A great book. Not a formula to discipleship or programs but realizing that life itself brings opportunity to teach, nurture, mentor daily like Jesus did with the disciples.The 21st century church lacks the focus to disciple as we seem to have relegated spiritual growth to Sunday morning service of good music, preaching, and Christian entertainment. I don't claim to be an innocent bystander. Ralph Moore hits the nail on the head reminding us that Jesus command was not to go and make converts or church members but disciples. He makes it clear that this can be and is a messy process as is real life and that's okay.

Great book covering all the basics on ministry, church growth and church plantings. A great mystery is solved: making disciples is an usually daunting task, but Moore keeps it simple and fun. I want to imitate his effectiveness by implementing the model of making disciples he writes about!

I loved every thing about this book. We tend to complicate the ability to make disciples. The reality is that if you are following Jesus with all of your heart then your disciple will catch on too. The question is: who are you intentionally bringing with you? This book provides the principles and the practicable of discipleship. Love it!

In his usual straightforward and compelling style, Ralph Moore addresses this subject with insight, humor and spectacularly practical ways to both "think and do" discipleship.For Moore, discipleship is a value, not a program. At the core of this book is a fierce allegiance to to the great commission, unto the multiplication of disciples (which would include future missionaries and church planters)to the ends of the earth.We will use it as a primary resource at Downtown Chapel, and I would encourage anyone with the slightest bit of interest in discipleship to read and apply.
