Original view, easy-to-read, well researched and appropriate for both buff and novice. There have been several books written on the commerce & economic history of the U.S. This book says commerce & economics weren't a part of the history, but caused the history of the U.S. to be as it was. Srinivasan does it cleverly by breaking out different aspects of commerce as singular chapters and then shows how history is the cloth that was woven out of these aspects, rather than the other way around. The author tells this tale in a very readable fashion.This is not an academic treatise, even as the bibliography shows that the research is extensive and well sourced Srinivasan was able to look at old research with new eyes. The author brings to life many facts that have been forgotten, overlooked or ignored over the years and places them in a well conceived and executed framework.I believe one of the reasons for the well-told story is because the author is an immigrant. He looks at America and the American narrative with new eyes and without the baggage some of us carry that slants our interpretation of history. All in all, this is one of the best histories I’ve ever read.

This "history" book is inspirational and riveting. Clearly the immigrant/entrepreneur author loves America. He describes its history through the eyes of the entrepreneurial spirit that propelled its growth to the position it now holds globally. The book is logically and chronologically organized by chapter and industry, and weaves in the major players of each period with a story-telling expertise that made it hard for me to "put down". I would love to see it introduced to school curriculums where few students know much about history, with the intention of igniting an excitement for and love of the study of history, which many feel is very dry. Srinivasan's history is anything but "dry." I found the narrator in the audible version to take some getting used to and would have preferred had Srinivasan read the book himself.

This is supposedly the first book that Srinivasan has penned; if true, he's clearly a Hamiltonesque polymath, as it's the most engaging economic history of the United States I've read: a real page-turner. I've also enjoyed John Steele Gordon's 'Empire of Wealth'; this is a similar quick-sweep-of-history that provides excellent insights on why we shouldn't be surprised by the current economic and political dynamics today. Srinivasan offers a new depth of understanding as he draws on his tech background to translate historic events into modern ("scaling up"/ 'going public') terms. His analysis of the economic value of the slave trade, pointing out how both the North and Great Britain were so integrally dependent on the system, was a revelation that I don't recall hearing in university courses. His description of the pre-"Compromise of 1850" dynamics regarding runaway slaves clarifies that today's "sanctuary cities" are nothing new. I think this book would be engaging for both economic experts and general readers such as myself. Srinivasan is a gifted communicator; I hope this will be the first of dozens more such efforts.

Clearly lays out, using one central theme at a time, (canals, railroads, etc.) how capitalism evolved, from the near-aristocracies of Southern plantations, to the Gilded Age of no-holds barred builders of industry, through the birth of the labor movement, to today's diminished role of the Middle Class.While this is a fairly long read, its easily digestible chapters allow you to put it down and come back to it again without feeling you've lost anything in the interim. The author's style is conversational, not too 'professorial'. He paints clear pictures of the various eras of American enterprise that take you back to your American History class, but now wanting to really pay attention.

The earlier sections (E.g. Tobacco, Cotton...) are more about their economic effect. The later sections (E.g. Flight) serve mainly as a jumping off point for a historical discussion. That's OK, as long as one realizes that's what one is getting. The historical discussions are accurate and good.

It is really a history of American Capitalists, rather than of American Capitalism.It is an interesting read. I was surprised at how many major American Capitalists filled a niche that was considered a "public good" (eg transportation and communication) and therefor were given help (tax breaks etc) by the government.

Very readable and informative. Not a dry history book but a collection of stories about events, products and people that changed America in ways that you probably never thought of.
