The book is terrific. The Kindle transcription is buggy. Lots of words are misspelled--possibly due to optical recognition failures from the original copy? But the biggest drawback I've found with Kindle is pronounced with this title: The images are smaller than postage stamps and when enlarged just become pixelated. In books like this where I want to see the photographed artifacts as closely and finely as possible, the Kindle edition left me wanting. By comparison, the physical copy which I looked at later has reasonably well-printed pictures that are a pleasure to look at.

A superior read! For anyone who has an interest in the Southwest and the mysteries of the prehistoric Americans who lived there, this book will draw you in and bring insights into the Anasazi, or "old ones", indeed, insights into how you look at your own life, as well. David Roberts builds upon his own explorations of the 4 corners area of the US with solid narrative, solider science and, remarkably, with what can only be termed "poetry" in describing the discoveries he, and others, have found in this remarkable volume about an equally remarkable, and little known, region of our nation. I raced through the book, as revelation tumbles upon revelation. Now, I can begin reading it again.

Both a highly readable view of archaeology in the SW of the USA (with one foray into Mexico) with an analysis of the history and puzzles posed by the Anasazi settlements and a personal exploration of the canyons that the Anasazi (mostly) lived in.A very enjoyable and enthralling read that certainly piqued my curiosity about a subject and an area that I knew little to nothing about. It also touches on the competing philosophies of leaving things untouched versus carting "finds" off to museums for analysis versus the rather difficult (impossible?) job that the BLM has of looking after some of these wonderful sitesThought provoking and fascinating

throughout the Southwest, around the Four Corners area, checking out the ruins, potsherds, petroglyphs and pictographs. Let him climb up the sandstone cliffs onto ledges and hidden shelters Anasazi built and lived in centuries past. Listen to his stories about other researchers and explorers past and present. Let him ask the tough questions about proper Indian etiquette of not probing into their past and their secret ceremonies. This is simply a great read! And you just might learn a thing or two about the American history, not of its independence from England but way before that when the West belonged to its original peoples.

Having just returned from two weeks walking-crawling along the earth in Butler Wash and Grand Gulch I too have had my cells infused with a mania for this area of the earth.Being home only to be planning next trip David Robert's journey and adventures in this book brought a sense of being there. Too his research and knowledge shared have educated me ten fold on the history and understanding of the ancients and the current peoples of this mystifying and beautiful area. In a tiny corncob, I loved this book, could not put it down. Thank you David Roberts.

This book takes you on a fantastic journey.Wonderful book start to finish.Loved every page. Now I'm really looking forward to reading this........."In The Lost World of the Old Ones, Roberts continues the hunt for answers begun in his classic book, In Search of the Old Ones."Exceptional writing and storytelling so I'm going to read all of the authors other books as well.

The history of the Anasazi, what they built and how they lived is told in riveting drama by David Roberts book. The pictographs are enthralling but so far not decoded so the Anasazi disappearance is still a mystery in spite of numerous speculations. Good read.

I read this right before a vacation road trip from California through Monument Valley to Santa Fe. Unfortunately, the kid's Spring Break was one week before NPS opened up the trails to most of the cliff dwellings. This book filled in a lot of the background and shared some secrets that the NPS can't talk about. This book allowed me greater insight into Anasazi culture. It meant I better understood the ruins, petroglyphs and other details before I was exploring Chaco Canyon. As a layman, I appreciate the down to earth writing (I work with archaeologists and I know this was not scholarly). I really appreciated that the author didn't include a lot of New Agey crap, but showed respect to Native beliefs.Better quality maps and photographs in the Kindle edition would have added a lot to this work.
