Grossly leaning on spectacle with very little objective information

I had read this book before and bought it, simply because it became available at a good price. For anyone interested in knowing everything there is to know about sexual deviance, this book is the ultimate guide. It is a bit dated in places, as ideas have changed about certain matters; however, I would recommend it highly.C.R. Melcher

This book serves no real medical purpose, but the socio-political aspects of culture at that period of time are understood through the medicalization of abnormal sexual conduct.

My last memory of Psychopathia Sexualis was the copy that I read as a 12 year-old that I found hidden in a box on top of the shelf in my parents' closet. (Wonder what Krafft-Ebbing would make of that??) This is an inexpensive means of obtaining this classic in the history of psychology and sexuality studies. While it was certainly on the cutting edge of attitudes in its day, the perspective on such things as homosexuality, viewed from today's vantage point, is laughable at times, saddening at times, when you think how many people suffered for much of a century because this was considered to be the best science available. This is an interesting nostalgia piece, a historical document, and sadly enough, not nearly as shocking or titillating as I remembered it from adolescence. Ah, bygone days... :-)

I am merely a layperson to psychology but I imagine that most of the claims contained in this book have been either discredited or just laughed off as knowledge about the pathology of psycological symptoms progressed since the initial publishing of the book. Regardless of its scientific varidity it is still a lot of fun to read and one need not have an advanced degree in pyshology to enjoy it, but a little knowldge does help get over some of the terminology. It is all quite easy for the novice reader as it tackles one weird sexual hang up after another and contains brief case studies of various subjects burdened with various sexual proclivities and obsessions. As the old saying goes: Nothing new under the sun. One might be surprised of the sexual perversities that have exisited long before the hedonistic eras of the 60's and 70's but it became less neurotic (well, at leat for some) and made lots of money for others who would exploit this new territory for good and ill. A very interesting read but one should seek out more reliable sources beyond this book. Freud (dubious) and Jung (a bit more progressive) are good places to begin.
