Strong 4.5 - The plot was good and didn't lag. The story line kept me interested through-out the entire book. I think Gray did a good job portraying Blair's psychosis. This condition was carefully and flawlessly developed with drugs as well as physical and metal manipulation to make her Maksim's perfect slave. Blair is Maksim's head of security and she has been conditioned to literally worship and protect Maksim. Charlie - our Hero - sees Blaire [in action fighting James] while attending a poker game and he is fascinated by her. He wants her to do a job for him and since Maksim owes him, Maksim agrees that Charlie can have Blair for three months but not to take her virginity. Charlie starts out as an egotistical domineering man that now (for three months) owns Blair but when feelings begin to develop he gives Blair something that she has never received - kindness and actual freedom. Blaire is very confused about these different feelings that she's beginning to develop towards Charlie. She continues to wait for the trap - for what Charlie really wants from her... but it never seems to come. There seems to be no alternative motive for his kindness and that confuses Blair. Charlie's actions encourage Blair to begin to feel emotions - to feel hope and desires.I noticed one person said that this ended on a cliffhanger but No I really don't believe that it did. There was a nice conclusion and wrap up to the story.HEA - Yep - Although Hard to believe after reading about Blair's torture.Details - They were very good yet not overwhelming. I was able to get just enough of the details to picture a room or an event to make me feel comfortable. This allowed me to picture the rest in my mind - the way I wanted it.Character Development - In my opinion this could have been better. I should not have been able to guess 30% into the story that the author was from the United Kingdom. In my opinion Gray's characters could have been more individualized. If a Mexican Mafia boss is in London he's typically not going to use the UK's slang. He probably wouldn't use words like 'trainer'. And by the way - it took me 75% of the book to figure out what a trainer was (and I workout) - I'll let you guess when you read the book lol. Charlie's mannerisms were individual but his character was not independently developed well. The word 'wanner' [want to] was used a lot by Charlie. I've heard of 'wanna' but never 'wanner'. In my limited experience talking with Mexican Mafia Bosses I have never heard this slang used. ;) I guess if Charlie was a London native I would have expected this type of vocabulary but since he wasn't I just didn't think the vocabulary worked with who he was.On the other hand I felt that Maksim's character was developed better. Gray added Russian words to make him seem realistic. In Charlie's case it was more like "he swore in Spanish" instead of actually saying what he said.Overall I liked the book and will be purchasing more from Gray.
I tried hard to like this book. Halfway through I stopped, and came on here to read the reviews. I see I wasn't the only one that had problems with it.I can't thank the person enough that suggested to skip to 80% on your Kindle to get to the end. And believe me, the ending wasn't worth waiting for.I do have to say it starts off great. I was glued. If only the author would have stuck to the premise of Blair being a solider, and followed through with the missions on hand. That was dropped like a hot potato.I liked that Blair started out as an awesome kick butt bodyguard. However, all goes south. I couldn't warm up to Blair no matter how much I tried. Even in the end she was so annoying. The author wasn't able to give this character enough warmth, or heart to care about her.The torture was a bit too much for me. And yet this girl stays. She's a smart person. I know she's been brainwashed, scared. However, given the many chances to get out, she goes back to her torturer, and it's not in any way a romance.Charlie was very likable, and so is James, but it drags on and on, and on until I was bored out of my mind. There is no story line, but torture. In skipping ahead instead of just stopping wasn't worth it either. Going to leave this author behind and the second book. I wouldn't waste your time if I were you.
This was completely not what I was expecting. When I see a book with warnings for extremely dark content, I jump all over it...but this, wasn’t all that dark. There were definitely dark themes, but more of the author “telling†and not “showing†any disturbing situations. Most of the book was about Blaire’s day to day activities while she lived with Charlie and how she started to develop feelings for him...and I have to say, I got pretty bored with it. The only suspense was at the very end and even that didn’t excite me by the time I finally got to that point. There were also a lot of details about Blaire that were barely glossed over and things left unanswered. I might go on to read the next book to see if there’s more revealed, or I might not.. just depends on my mood.
Blaire by Anita Gray: 4 starsFrom the beautiful cover alone I immediately one-clicked knowing Blaire was going to fulfill my dark needs. At least I'd hoped. While content was indeed dark, I got the feeling Blaire was leaning more on the edgier romance side. I won't say it was insta-love, but the attraction between the 2 main characters right away had me worried that I knew the path it was going down. Man was I wrong. It did take quite awhile for Blaire to gain speed but once it did it didn't let loose. Anita did a great job creating characters that I could feel and connect with. The story kept me enthralled and on edge knowing a ball was going to drop. The last 25% of the book was intense and gloriously violent with plot twists and revelations that were unexpected. Damn good book!Side note: Charlie's use of the word "wanner" almost killed me. I'm racking my brain trying to remember his ethnicity in the book (Hispanic & European?) but am pretty sure it wasn't backwoods hillbilly. He still remained a total badass character regardless.
