Wide as the Wind

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up-This historical novel centers on a little-known chapter of Polynesian history—no island is specified, but the narrative conjures up Easter Island and others. Many of these islands were impoverished because of deforestation, so their best and brightest were sent on ocean voyages to obtain seed stock for trees in distant places. (In 1947, Norwegian Thor Heyerdahl tried to replicate such a journey with modern boat-building technologies and found building the boat difficult. The voyage itself was harrowing.) Protagonist Miru is a valiant hero, sailing into the sunset and bringing back trees and plants that are essential to the viability of his close-knit community. Miru is well-developed, and he's featured in an engaging subplot of a chaste romance, sustained even through a long separation during his seafaring years. Miru's extended family is large, and many additional interactions between him and members of the community showcase his coming-of-age. For readers who appreciate intricately detailed storytelling, the payoff is a strong sense of Polynesian culture in a novel whose style is reminiscent of James Michener's. Stanton spent many years as an English literature professor, and his craftsmanship reflects this background. VERDICT Recommended for ambitious middle and high school readers who appreciate a depiction of a little-discussed but significant historical period and culture; for large historical fiction collections.-Amy Thurow, New Glarus School District, WI

**"Wide as the Wind" has won the 2017 Next Generation Indie Book Award for young adult fiction, the largest not-for-profit book awards program in North America. It has also won the 2017 silver Moonbeam Award for Young Adult Fiction and the 2018 silver Feathered Quill Award for Teen Fiction.** Reviews: "In the midst of a forbidden love, young Miru sails across dangerous Polynesian seas to find new seeds and trees for his island that has been ravaged by war. Wide as the Wind is a lyrically crafted novel of love and adventure as well as a cautionary tale for the survival of the earth and our human species. It now forms part of what has been called 'the environmental imagination.'" --Juan Carlos Galeano, poet and environmentalist"Wide as the Wind speaks to a fundamental truth: our need to protect the planet's environment." --John Flenley and Paul Bahn, authors of The Enigmas of Easter Island"Wide as the Wind transports us to an island world both outside time and urgently relevant to us in the 21st century. At the center of the story stands fifteen-year-old Miru, an extraordinary young man who is called upon to forsake passion, family, and security in a quest to restore his island so it might sustain his people again. This novel reminds us of what is important and what we might be called upon to set aside in order to make a world where we and our descendants can live and thrive." --Leatha Kendrick, author, Almanac of the Invisible

A TIMELY ADVENTURE STORY FILLED WITH EMOTION AND EXCITEMENT! THE ISLAND WAS SAVED. LET'S HOPE THE EARTH CAN BE SAVED AS WELL! ROBERT SWEEN

From the ravaged tiny Polynesian island of Vaitea arises a hero and heroine for our times. Based on his ten years of Easter Island research, Edward Stanton has written an inspiring adventure about a brother and sister, their island, and how they saved it. In Wide as the Wind, Miru and Renga face tough choices and much hardship when they set sail to a distant island to find the seeds and shoots of trees that could reforest their homeland. Their return to Vaitea reaps romance and additional challenges in this teen historical novel.Adventure is at the forefront of this tightly-written novel. Prior to embarking on their journey, Miru and Renga learn the sailor’s craft. Their grandfather teaches them to weave sails of pounded bark, cut full-sized paddles, make nets of mulberry cloth, and fashion birdbone hooks. He also teaches them to coast the island in a longboat, navigate by the sun, moon, and stars, recognize winds, currents, and constellations, and to fish. After recruiting a third crewman, the brother and sister duo set sail. On their journey, they brave the elements. The wind gusts. The sea roars. Supplies are washed overboard. The sun burns, parching their throats. They encounter sharks and their third crewman is attacked. Miru, Renga, and their third crewsman sail fifty-two days before finding land, and this is just the beginning of their adventure. At the heart of Wide as the Wind also lies a theme. Years of tribal wars have devastated Vaitea. Tribes people who survived are now facing starvation. To save them, Miru must personally sacrifice romantic love, suffer injury and loss, and even risk his life. Even when they return from their journey to a distant island with the seeds and shoots of trees necessary to reforest their homeland, the tribal wars threaten to continue. Although some historical accounts suggest that extinction of natural resources of the real-life Easter Island inhabitants started long before internal conflicts, the latter certainly didn’t help. In basing his story on a real place, Stanton has crafted a parable that shows how mankind’s violence can lead to environmental destruction and even the end of a world.Wide as the Wind has many other positives. The characters are realistic. Miru and Renga are likeable teens to which every reader can relate. Miru disagrees with his father’s choices, enjoys swimming with dolphins, and sneaks away to spend time with his girlfriend. The descriptions are vivid; the diction is strong. Here’s just one phrase for example: “He sat down with them on paving stones that glittered with brine and fish scales….” There are even moments of humor. One of the funniest is when birds poop on Miru’s head, just after he’s received the call to save his people. My one complaint is that I felt at times the action moved too fast and kept me at an emotional distance from the characters.Author Edward Stanton has written eleven books. His fiction, poems, and essays have appeared in publications across the world. He is a professor of literature, and has won grants for his travel, research, and writing. Wide as the Wind is a worthy addition to his literary accomplishments. It has won the 2017 silver Moonbeam Award for Young Adult Fiction and the 2018 silver Feathered Quill Award for Teen Fiction.

After years of war, the Polynesian island of Vaitea is environmentally devastated. The vegetation is dying and even the birds are leaving. Miru’s father is a warrior and the same fate is planed for him, but Marama the island sorceress sees a different future. She tells Miru that he must sail to another island to bring back seeds and shoots of trees to restore the island’s vegetation. At first Miru refuses to face the challenge. Finally, he accepts his fate and tries to win approval from his warrior father. His father refuses and is equally adamant when Miru asks for his sister Renga to be a member of the crew. Miru perseveres. He and Renga choose a third crew member, learn about sailing, and finally set off. This is a fascinating historical novel based on Edward Stanton’s study of Easter Island. The book paints a devastating picture of what can happen to an island when the focus is on war rather than on keeping the islands environment vibrant and capable of sustaining the population. A delightful book for Earth Day, it is an adventure where children set out to save their homeland because the adults are too involved in the political chaos and wars that are leading to the destruction of Vaitea. The three children are sympathetic characters. They exhibit courage and the ability to face problems and find solutions. I recommend this book for teen audiences, but adults will enjoy it as well.I received this book from PR by the Book for this review.

Wide as the Wind by Eward StantonWe've all heard of Easter Island, right? How about Vaitea? They are the same Island. At the request of PRBy the Book, the author graciously sent me a copy of his book to read for review. I'm very glad he did. This was an an excellent mix of the history of the time with well-thought-out-characters. They marry who they must for their tribes, not who they love. They have conflicts in their own tribes; warriors and and farmers don't agree on policy. You can pick up a copy now. This island is vacant. Maybe if we read this story it might help us see where we are going now...Even the peaceful are strong people who follow traditions. The warriors would rather kill and take than farm. It finally breaks out into civil war and young and old and fight and die.Let history show you war is not a good thing and even winning isn't a victory. This is well written and young readers won't realize they are getting a history lesson on the way. I highly recommend it.
